What GenoPlot does
A focused tool for one job: turning your genealogy data into a visualization you can actually use.
Universal GEDCOM support
GEDCOM has been the standard way to move genealogy data between programs since 1984. If you can export a .ged file from your tool, it works with GenoPlot. We parse the standard GEDCOM format and extract individuals, families, and the relationships between them.
We have tested compatibility with exports from:
- •Ancestry.com — Export from tree settings under "Manage my tree"
- •FamilySearch.org — Download GEDCOM from the individual record pages
- •MyHeritage — Export from the Family Tree tab
- •Gramps — File → Export → GEDCOM format
- •RootsMagic — File → Export → GEDCOM
- •Legacy Family Tree — File → Export to → GEDCOM
- •Family Tree Maker — File → Export → Entire File as GEDCOM
If your software is not on this list but exports standard GEDCOM files, it will almost certainly work. The GEDCOM specification is well-defined, and we follow it closely.
High-resolution SVG output
Your family tree renders as a scalable vector graphic (SVG). Unlike raster images that get blurry when you zoom in, SVGs stay sharp at any zoom level. A tree with 5,000 people looks just as crisp zoomed into a single branch as it does zoomed out to show the whole pedigree.
The rendering engine lays out each generation systematically, connecting parents to children and spouses to each other. The result is a chart that follows the conventions genealogists expect: ancestors go up, descendants go down, and family groups are clustered together.
Interactive pan and zoom
The tree viewer is built on Leaflet, the same mapping library used by OpenStreetMap and hundreds of other mapping applications. This means navigation feels natural: click and drag to pan, scroll to zoom, pinch on mobile. You can zoom from a single person all the way out to an overview of your entire tree.
This is the key difference from most genealogy platforms. Instead of clicking through generations one at a time, you get a continuous map of your family that you can explore freely.
Email notifications
Large trees can take time to process. Rather than making you sit and wait, GenoPlot sends you an email when your visualization is ready to view. Upload your file, go about your day, and come back when you get the notification.
While your tree is processing, you can still see it in your tree list with a "pending" status. The view page shows a progress indicator so you know it has not been forgotten.
Secure by design
Genealogy data is personal. Your GEDCOM files and generated visualizations are stored securely and are only accessible through your authenticated account. We use encrypted connections for all data transfer and do not share your information with third parties.
Authentication is handled by Stytch, a dedicated identity platform. This means we never store your password — you log in through a secure magic link sent to your email.
Try it with your own tree
Export a GEDCOM file from your genealogy tool and upload it. Takes about two minutes.
